Drowning Prevention Auckland announces Chief Executive transition

Drowning Prevention Auckland has announced that Nicola Keen-Biggelaar will step down from her role as Chief Executive at the end of August, following seven years leading the organisation.

Nicola will take up the position of Chief Executive at Arthritis New Zealand, marking the next chapter in her leadership journey and fulfilling her goal of leading a national charitable organisation.

During her time as Chief Executive, Nicola has led DPA through a significant period of development and change. She has worked alongside the Board, team and sector partners to strengthen DPA’s strategic direction, extend its reach across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, deepen its research and advocacy, and build strong foundations for the organisation’s future.

DPA Board Chair Matt Sabourin says Nicola leaves the organisation in a strong position.

“Nicola has made a significant contribution to DPA and to drowning prevention across Tāmaki Makaurau. Her commitment, leadership and determination have helped shape the organisation DPA is today.

“While we are sorry to see her leave, this is a well-deserved next step in her leadership journey. The Board is grateful for everything Nicola has contributed and wishes her every success as she takes up this important national role.”

Nicola says it has been a privilege to lead DPA.

“I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together over the past seven years. DPA’s progress reflects the expertise and commitment of our team, the guidance of our Board, and the support of our funders, partners and communities.

“Drowning prevention is work that matters deeply, and I will leave with enormous respect for the people who contribute to it every day. I am confident DPA has a strong team, clear direction and solid foundations from which to continue growing its impact.”

The DPA Board is progressing interim leadership arrangements and planning for the recruitment of the organisation’s next Chief Executive. Further updates will be shared in due course.

The Board and team congratulate Nicola on her appointment and look forward to celebrating her contribution before she finishes in August.
