The water in the sea, lakes, rivers, waterholes and harbours may be cold, rough, moving, murky, aerated or choppy, making it more challenging than in a swimming pool.
Choppy/Rough Water
- Rough water can be simulated by having a group of children using their hands, or kickboards, and pushing the water away from their bodies.
- Simulate swimming in open water, try different survival strokes
Teaching Tips and Class Management
- Floating in simulated rough open water
- A group of students, backs against side of pool, creating rough water (with hands or kick boards). Alternatively form a large circle.
-
- A smaller group of students try floating (back and front, and with and without lifejackets).
- Swimming in simulated rough open water
- A group of students, backs against side of pool, creating rough water (with hands or kick boards). Alternatively have two lines of students facing each other.
- Two students swim (survival and non-survival strokes) through the group of ‘rough water makers’ and join the end of the line/s.
